PGPD Remembers Fallen Officer Sergeant Harry Kinikin, Jr.

Let us pause to remember our fallen hero Sergeant Harry L. Kinikin, Jr., lost this day in 1990 as a result of injuries he suffered three years earlier while investigating a theft.

Sergeant Kinikin was born in 1951 and raised in Temple Hills. He attended Potomac High School.  After graduation, he worked briefly in the banking industry before joining the Prince George's County Police Department on June 25, 1973.  He was assigned to the Seat Pleasant station.

On October 17, 1986, Sergeant Kinikin was on routine patrol when he stopped at a convenience store in the 7100 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Highway.  The manager informed Sergeant Kinikin that he had just spotted a woman who he suspected of shoplifting from his store the week before.  Sergeant Kinikin located the suspect in the parking lot of a nearby gas station and initiated contact with her.  As he tried to notify Public Safety Communications of his status and position, the suspect suddenly pulled a knife from her purse and stabbed Sergeant Kinikin in his side.  He drew and discharged his service weapon, wounding the suspect in the abdomen.  The suspect then stabbed Sergeant Kinikin a second time, piercing his left ventricle.  Sergeant Kinikin made a final radio transmission advising the dispatcher that both he and the suspect had been wounded.  Responding units arrived on scene moments later and found Sergeant Kinikin unresponsive.  They began CPR and rushed him to a hospital.  Sergeant Kinikin never regained consciousness.  He succumbed to his injuries on January 13, 1990, at the Presidential Woods Health Care Center in Adelphi.

Sergeant Kinikin served the Prince George's County Police Department for 13 years and was the 17th member of this agency to make the ultimate sacrifice.  He was the 28th law enforcement officer to give his life in service to this profession within Prince George's County.

At the time of his death, Sergeant Kinikin was 38 years old and survived by his wife, son, and daughter.

The Prince George’s County Police Department is investigating a fatal pedestrian collision that occurred earlier this morning in Hyattsville. The deceased is identified as 24-year-old Jose Martin Huaman of the 4900 block of 42nd Place in Hyattsville.

When they arrived, patrol officers found Huaman suffering from critical injuries. A Prince George’s County Police Department patrol officer provided CPR to the victim until paramedics arrived but unfortunately, the man later died at a hospital.

The driver lost control of the vehicle, struck the median, crossed into the southbound lane, struck Huaman in the roadway, and crashed into the front of the store.

There have been no charges filed at this point. The collision remains under investigation.

Four Suspects Arrested In Armored Car Robbery

Antonio Cooper

Juwan Watkins

Four suspects are in custody in connection with an armored car robbery in Camp Springs. They are identified as 25-year-old Antonio Lamar Cooper of the 1700 block of Lyman Place in Northeast Washington, 21-year-old Maurice Lorenzo Foreman of no fixed address, 19-year-old Eugene Robert Watkins and 18-year-old Juwan Armarni Watkins, both of the 1500 block of 38th Street in Southeast Washington.

On January 15, 2014, at about 11:00 am, patrol officers were called to the 4800 block of Allentown Road for an armored car robbery.  When they arrived on scene, patrol officers discovered that two armored truck employees had just been robbed.

The preliminary investigation reveals four suspects approached the victims as they were picking up money from a fast food restaurant.  One of the suspects served as the getaway driver, while the remaining three suspects confronted the victims.  The suspects took the victims’ duty weapons and stole an undetermined amount of money from the armored car.  The suspects then sped away.

Two good Samaritans, who witnessed the robbery, began to follow the fleeing suspects in their own pickup truck. The two men also called 911 and provided information on the suspects and their location.  The suspects noticed they were being followed while traveling down Allentown Road and onto Branch Avenue. Our preliminary investigation reveals that at least one of the suspects fired a gun toward the witnesses, hitting their truck multiple times.  The driver of the pickup truck, a former Marine, pulled off Branch Avenue and stopped following the suspects.  Thankfully, neither of the men were struck by gunfire.  The driver was taken to the hospital for injuries from shattered glass.

Due in large part to the information provided by the witnesses, Prince George’s County patrol officers arrived quickly and began pursuing the suspects as they continued down Branch Avenue.  The suspects lost control of their SUV and crashed near 34th and M Streets in Southeast Washington.  One of the suspects jumped from the SUV armed with a gun as a PGPD officer confronted him.  The patrol officer was able to tackle the suspect before an exchange of gunfire. The remaining suspects began to run away.  One of those suspects was quickly arrested.  The Metropolitan Police Department arrested the two other suspects several hours later, after they were found hiding in a nearby neighborhood.  Four handguns, including the two taken from the victims, were recovered.  Investigators believe most of, if not all, of the stolen money was recovered on the scene.

All four suspects will remain in the custody of the Metropolitan Police Department, pending extradition to Prince George’s County.  All will face charges related to the armed robbery and shooting.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Prince George’s County Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division at 301-772-4905.  Callers wishing to remain anonymous may call Crime Solvers at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477), text “PGPD plus your message” to CRIMES (274637) on your cell phone or go to www.pgcrimesolvers.com.

Rain or shine, chilly or bitterly cold, Prince George’s County Police patrol officers work around the clock to protect and serve the residents of this county. Too often their good police work goes unnoticed.  We’d like to introduce you to the patrol officers of the month for December 2013.

District I Police Officer of the Month
Police Officer First Class Ché Atkinson

On December 1, 2013, Police Officer First Class Che Atkinson responded to the 9300 block of Cherry Hill Road for a possible shooting.  When he arrived, he immediately began searching for the suspect.  POFC Atkinson spotted a taxi cab leaving the area with a passenger inside who matched the suspect description.  The patrol officer quickly conducted a traffic stop on the cab and the passenger was positively identified as the shooting suspect. The suspect was carrying two guns and suspected PCP.

District II Police Officer of the Month
Police Officer Harold Nichols

On December 16, 2013, Police Officer Harold Nichols was called to a grocery store in the 12100 block of Central Avenue for the report of a person spraying lighter fluid around the store and also dousing himself with the flammable liquid.  Police Officer Nichols arrived just as the man was trying to light himself on fire. The patrol officer approached and was able to talk the man into putting down the lighter.  The man was then taken to a hospital for care.

District III Police Officer of the Month
Police Officer First Class Gregory Travis

Police Officer Ashby Hoffman

On December 19, 2013, Police Officer First Class Gregory Travis and Police Officer Ashby Hoffman were called to the 3900 block of Regency Parkway for a domestic-related complaint.  When they arrived, they spoke with a woman who informed them that her boyfriend was inside an apartment with her two children, armed with a revolver.  Before the patrol officers could talk to the suspect, he locked himself in a utility closet.  POFC Travis and Police Officer Hoffman quickly removed the children from the apartment.  After a short standoff, the patrol officers were able to convince the suspect to come out of his hiding place. He was then taken into custody. A K9 team was called in and recovered the revolver in a grassy area directly underneath the window of the closet where the suspect had been hiding.  It was later learned that the suspect also had an open warrant for an assault.

District IV Police Officer of the Month
Police Officer Channing Reed

Police Officer Channing Reed earned the title of District IV Officer of the Month for his exemplary work over three consecutive days.  On December 4, 2013,  Police Officer Reed was called to the 3100 Block of Good Hope Avenue for the report of an armed suspect.  When he arrived, the suspect began to run away.  Police Officer Reed quickly caught him and recovered a loaded revolver.  On December 5, 2013, the patrol officer saw a suspicious car parked in the area of Akron Street.  During his investigation, he recovered 18.5 grams of suspect crack cocaine and took one suspect into custody.  The next day, Police Officer Reed spotted several people loitering in the 3300 block of Branch Avenue.  During a pat down of one of the men, Police Officer Reed found a loaded handgun in the man’s waistband.  The suspect was a convicted felon.  He was arrested.

District V Police Officer of the Month
Corporal Walter Calhoun III

Police Officer Robert Ray, Jr.

Corporal Walter Calhoun and Police Officer Robert Ray, Jr. responded to the 5600 Block of Kaveh Court for the report of an armed suspect.  When they arrived, they spoke with a victim who said a man had just walked up and pointed a gun at him as he stood on the front porch of a home.  The patrol officers searched the home and found the suspect hiding in the basement.  They also spotted the handle of a handgun sticking out between a pillow and the sofa. The gun was loaded.  The suspect was arrested.

District VI Police Officer of the Month
Corporal George Schwaeble

Police Officer Daniel Siculietano

On December 28, 2013, Corporal George Schwaeble and Police Officer Daniel Siculietano responded to the 6400 block of Park Hall Drive West for a suicide call.  When they arrived, the patrol officers spoke with a woman who said a man was inside her home with her child.  The man was armed with a knife and threatening to commit suicide.  A few moments later, the man exited the house with the knife, but quickly went back inside.  The man then exited again but refused to show his hands.  The man began to wander around the yard. The patrol officers strategically moved to the door so that the man could not go back inside. The man continued to ignore their verbal commands and fearing that he may still be armed, a Taser was deployed and he was subdued.  He was taken to the hospital for observation. The child wasn’t hurt.
