Newspaper Omission Gives Speeders a Lucky Break

$

People who paid up after getting caught speeding on a Fort Washington road are getting back their $40 due to a technicality.  The Prince George's County Police Department learned earlier this month that we operated a speed camera in the county without first advertising that camera's location in a newspaper.  Placing those advertisements is required by state law.  A WUSA9 inquiry led us to this discovery.

The camera in question was posted at the St. Ignatius Loyola School in the 2300 block of Brinkley Road in Fort Washington.  Once we became aware of this advertising omission, the camera was immediately taken down.  It appears that while the correct location and advertisement was initially sent to a newspaper for publication, the location was inadvertently removed from the final proof.   All other protocol required by the state was followed in connection to this camera-- including proper signage, site testing and advertising on the Prince George's County website.  @PGPDNews also advertised the camera location.

The camera was first posted in November of 2012.  Since then, it has issued tickets to 2,059 speeders.  Nearly 1,500 of the violations will be refunded and the rest will be voided.  The refunds total more than $58,000.  The offenders should begin receiving the refunds within 45 days.  This camera location issued just .002% of our total issued tickets.

This appears to be an isolated incident.  To make it easier for drivers to find, we'll re-advertise the entire list of camera locations in the Gazette within the next two weeks. This information has been available on our county website since before the camera became operational in the fall of 2012.

For more information, please contact the Prince George's County Police Department's Media Relations Division at 301-772-4710.

PGPD Investigates Police-Involved Shooting

The Prince George’s County Police Department is investigating a police-involved shooting in Northeast Washington.  The Special Investigative Response Team (SIRT) is leading the investigation.

On January 22, 2014, at about 5:45 pm, patrol officers responded for an armed robbery in progress in the 3300 block of Walters Lane in Forestville.  At least two suspects entered a liquor store and demanded cash while holding an employee at gunpoint.  Fearing for his safety, the employee complied.  The suspects then sped off in a minivan.

Patrol officers responding to the scene saw the minivan driving in the area.  When the  suspects refused to stop, officers pursued them into Washington, D.C.  The suspects lost control of the minivan and crashed into a utility pole on Clay Place near 57th Street in Northeast Washington.  At least two suspects then ran.

The preliminary investigation reveals the officers confronted the suspects.  During the confrontation, a PGPD officer discharged his duty weapon.  An armed suspect was struck by gunfire, however it's not clear if the suspect shot himself, or was struck by the officer. The suspect is in a Prince George's County hospital tonight.  A second suspect is in the custody of the Metropolitan Police Department, awaiting extradition to Prince George's County.  A handgun and money believed to be from the robbery were recovered on the scene of the crash.

The involved patrol officer is a six-year veteran of the Prince George’s County Police Department.  He is on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Anyone with information on this investigation is asked to call the CID Robbery Unit at 301-772-4905. Callers can remain anonymous by calling CRIME SOLVERS at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477). It was a desperate call for help.  A daughter called the PGPD last night to help find her elderly mother who suffers from dementia.  Her 80-year-old mother had wandered off and she was likely somewhere outside.  It was a freezing nine degrees and dark.  Finding her quickly was critical.

Our Aviation Unit was alerted.  A flight crew boarded Air 1 and headed in the direction of the 11200 block of Evans Trail in Beltsville.  They knew time was of the essence.  The pilot and tactical flight officer began a strategic search of the area using the helicopter's thermal imaging system, FLIR.  The flight crew noticed a hot spot in some nearby woods. They guided patrol officers on the ground to that location. Thankfully, it was the missing woman. She had been in the snow and wasn't able to get up on her own.

The FLIR camera caught the potentially life-saving rescue seen below.

For any interested media, the flight crew will be available for an interview today.

Chief Mark Magaw recently welcomed a young woman named Amanda to the Prince George’s County Police Department.  Amanda is a remarkable person who has survived difficult times in her young life.  Despite those challenges, she has persevered, thanks, in part, to a police officer she called on for help years ago.  That interaction spurred Amanda's interest in law enforcement and her desire to now become a police officer herself.  NBC Washington’s Barbara Harrison highlighted Amanda's visit to the PGPD in her long-running and well-respected series, “Wednesday’s Child.”  During the visit, Amanda toured the Special Operations Division. Chief Magaw also presented Amanda with an honorary badge, meaning she’s forever a part of the PGPD family.  Before she left, Amanda met with our recruiting team. Who knows? Maybe she’ll wear the PGPD uniform in the near future.  Please take a moment and watch the story and share your thoughts.
