Deryck Anthony Nedd

Updated February 19, 2014: The suspect is identified as 50-year-old Deryck Anthony Nedd, of the 8100 block of Riggs Road in Adelphi.  Detectives believe Nedd may be connected to multiple burglaries across the county.  Nedd faces multiple charges related to the burglary.  He remains hospitalized in critical condition.

The Prince George’s County Police Department is investigating a burglary at a Beltsville business.  During the burglary, the business’s owner shot the suspect.

On February 18, 2014, at about 11:20 pm, patrol officers were called to the 11300 block of Old Baltimore Pike for a shooting.  When they arrived, patrol officers spoke to the owner of Lloyd’s Automotive. The preliminary investigation reveals the owner shot the suspect after the suspect forced his way into the business. The suspect is in critical condition, but is expected to survive.  Immediately after the shooting, the owner of Lloyd’s Automotive called 911. He is cooperating with our detectives.

The preliminary investigation also reveals that after the suspect broke into the store, he forced his way into an office. The business owner was inside that office.  A confrontation took place and during the confrontation, the owner shot the suspect. The suspect then ran from the store and drove away.  He lost control of his car and crashed at the intersection of Virginia Manor Road and Muirkirk Road. He was taken to the hospital from that crash scene.

Charges are pending against the suspect. Detectives are investigating whether he is linked to other burglaries in the county. After the investigation is complete, the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office will screen the case regarding the actions of the owner.

Media Relations Division Assistant Commander, Lt. Bill Alexander, will answer questions about this burglary today at PGPD headquarters at 2:30 pm.

For more information, please contact the Prince George’s County Police Department’s Media Relations Division at 301-772-4710.

Let us pause to remember our fallen hero Officer Carroll D. Garrison, lost this day in 1973 while investigating a reported breaking and entering.

Officer Garrison was born on April 16, 1941 and was raised in Hyattsville. After graduating from high school, he joined the United States Navy where he served with honor and distinction for nine years. In 1968, Officer Garrison joined the Prince George's County Police Department, following in the footsteps of his father, Sergeant Carroll V. Garrison. Sergeant Garrison had recently retired from the PGPD after being injured in the line of duty. Officer Garrison was assigned to the Hyattsville station.

On February 20, 1973, at about 8:10 pm, Officer Garrison responded to a report of breaking and entering in progress on Medwick Drive. Officer Garrison was the first officer on scene and discovered a broken window in the back of the home. As he approached the window to investigate, the homeowner, who thought the officer may be an intruder, fired a shotgun from within the home, striking Officer Garrison in the chest. Officer Garrison was rushed to a hospital, where he unfortunately died of his injuries.

Officer Garrison served the Prince George's County Police Department for five years and was the eighth member of this agency to make the ultimate sacrifice. He was the 12th law enforcement officer to give his life while serving this profession within Prince George's County.

At the time of his death, Officer Carroll D. Garrison was 31 years old and survived by his wife.

Woman Suffers From Dementia; Found Stuck in Thorn Bushes

The call came into 911 at 2:30 am this morning.  A woman couldn't find her 62-year-old grandmother who suffers from dementia and other medical conditions.  She had wandered away from their home on Marbury Court in District Heights sometime after midnight.

PGPD patrol officers immediately responded and began to search for her.  At their request,  Corporal Don Smith and K9 Tayaut joined the effort to find the missing woman.  The bloodhound sniffed the woman's pillowcase and immediately began to track her.  The track took the team past two rows of townhouses, past a playground and into some woods.   About 70 yards into the woods, the K9 team found the woman.  She was on the ground and tangled in some thorn bushes, unable to get up on her own.  A second PGPD police officer carried her out of the woods at 4:20 am.  She was then taken to a hospital.

The armored car guards had been disarmed and robbed at gunpoint.   A good Samaritan, who witnessed the robbery, began to follow the suspects’ car.  The suspects spotted the good Samaritan and opened fire on his truck on Branch Avenue.  After the shooting, the suspects continued down Branch Avenue towards the District where they eventually lost control of their car and crashed.  They jumped out and tried to run away.  Police Officer McDonald began to chase the suspects. When he neared one of the four suspects, the suspect pulled out a handgun and began to turn toward Officer McDonald.  Officer McDonald was able to disarm the suspect and arrest him.

District IV Police Officers of the Month

Police Officer Amir Smith

On January 15, 2014, Police Officers Jerold Greenwood and Amir Smith also responded to the armored car robbery in Suitland.  The patrol officers saw the suspects travelling down Branch Avenue and began to pursue their car into the District.  After crashing, the suspects bailed out of their car and began to run away. The driver was arrested.

The Prince George’s County Police Department is investigating an incident that led to a lockdown at Potomac High School in Oxon Hill this morning.

On March 5, 2014, at 9:20 am, a call came in for a reported shooting near the school in the 1400 block of Southview Drive.  The caller reported seeing two suspects heading toward the school.  The PGPD recommended the school be put on lockdown.  At that time, a student texted a family member mentioning the lockdown and surmising there may be a gunman in the school. That family member called the District IV police station stating she received information that a gunman was in a classroom and students were in danger.

Due to the nature of that call, patrol officers immediately entered the school to locate the alleged gunman. Based on preliminary information, the officers narrowed down their search to two classrooms.  They patted down students in those classrooms to check for possible weapons. No weapons were found. There is also no information at this point that verifies the reported shooting on Southview Drive ever took place. Officers verified the report of a gunman at the school was inaccurate.  The lockdown was lifted before 11 am. An investigation into the original call for service is underway.

Corporal Jensen courageously battled his injuries for 10 days before passing away on March 9, 2010.

Corporal Jensen served the Prince George's County Police Department for five years and was the 26th member of the agency to make the ultimate sacrifice.  He was the 50th law enforcement officer to give his life in service to this profession within Prince George's County.

At the time of his death, Corporal Tommy Jensen was 27 years old and survived by his wife of four months and his parents.
