The Prince George’s County Police Department arrested and charged a dump truck driver who intentionally rammed his truck into two marked police cruisers. Thankfully, our two patrol officers, who were standing next to those cruisers, escaped injury. The suspect is 31-year-old Gene Thomas Brandon, Jr., of the 19000 block of Aquasco Road in Aquasco. The attack on our officers was captured on surveillance video.

On January 7, 2015, at about 11:35 am, our officers were talking next to their cruisers in a parking lot of a shopping center in Glendarden. Brandon pulled up his dump truck next to the officers and yelled at them from an open window. The officers ordered him to keep moving as he was blocking traffic. Brandon drove off and turned around in the parking lot. Seconds later, the officers saw the dump truck barreling directly toward them. The officers, who were standing between their cruisers, ran out of the truck's path. Brandon slammed his truck into the back of one of the cruisers, causing it to plow into the second one. The dump truck finally came to rest on top of one of the cruisers after pushing it more than 50 feet. Brandon then jumped out of his truck and aggressively approached our officers. The officers were able to take Brandon into custody without injury to the officers or the suspect.

Brandon is charged with two counts of attempted murder and two counts of first degree assault. He’s in custody at the Department of Corrections being held without bond.

This appears to be an isolated incident. Our investigation reveals the suspect has a history of mental illness. He told our detectives he had not been taking his prescribed medication.

For more information, please call the Prince George's County Police Department's Media Relations Division 301-772-4710.

In their own words. Two of our District II patrol officers narrowly escaped injury this week when a dump truck driver intentionally plowed into their cruisers. On Wednesday, Officers Lauchman and Bragg arrived early for a squad lunch in Glenarden. They were outside of their cruisers talking, when the dump truck driver targeted them. The suspect has a history of mental illness. This appears to be an isolated incident. The entire Prince George’s County Police Department is proud of Officers Lauchman and Bragg, who handled this dangerous situation with courage and composure. We know our community and many beyond our county borders overwhelmingly support our officers too – at last check one of our Facebook posts had reached more than 1.2 million people.

Let us pause to remember our fallen hero Sergeant Harry L. Kinikin, Jr., lost this day in 1990 as a result of injuries he suffered three years earlier while investigating a theft.

Sergeant Kinikin was born in 1951 and raised in Temple Hills. He attended Potomac High School. After graduation, he worked briefly in the banking industry before joining the Prince George's County Police Department on June 25, 1973. He was assigned to the Seat Pleasant station.

On October 17, 1986, Sergeant Kinikin was out on patrol when he stopped at a convenience store in the 7100 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Highway. The manager informed Sergeant Kinikin he had just spotted a woman who he suspected of shoplifting from his store the week before. Sergeant Kinikin located the suspect in the parking lot of a nearby gas station and initiated contact with her. As he tried to notify Public Safety Communications of his status and position, the suspect suddenly pulled a knife from her purse and stabbed Sergeant Kinikin in his side. He drew and discharged his service weapon, wounding the suspect in the abdomen. The suspect then stabbed Sergeant Kinikin a second time, piercing his left ventricle. Sergeant Kinikin made a final radio transmission advising the dispatcher that both he and the suspect had been wounded. Responding units arrived on scene moments later and found Sergeant Kinikin unresponsive. They began CPR and rushed him to a hospital. Sergeant Kinikin never regained consciousness. He succumbed to his injuries on January 13, 1990, at the Presidential Woods Health Care Center in Adelphi.

Sergeant Kinikin served the Prince George's County Police Department for 13 years and was the 17th member of this agency to make the ultimate sacrifice. He was the 28th law enforcement officer to give his life in service to this profession within Prince George's County.

At the time of his death, Sergeant Kinikin was 38 years old and survived by his wife, son, and daughter.

PGPD to Educate Drivers About Preventing Gas Station Thefts

$
0
0

They are crimes of opportunity and are often preventable. A driver is pumping gas and a thief targets their car. The thief quietly opens a door and snatches a valuable item that’s out in plain view. In these cold winter months, criminals also target cars which owners are warming up and leave unattended. Within seconds, the suspect has driven off in the car.

The number of thefts from cars is down 30% countywide so far this year. The PGPD is committed to lowering that number even more, in part by working with our community on prevention. On Tuesday, District II COPS officers will educate morning commuters about these crimes and how best to prevent them.

When:   Tuesday, January 20, 2015

Time:     7:00 am

Where:  Safeway Gas Station
