Let us pause to remember our fallen hero, Officer Robert E. Yeszerski, lost this day in 1968.

On the morning of November 30, 1968, members of the Seat Pleasant Police Department contacted a resident about his inoperable car that was illegally parked in front of his home. The officers ordered the man to remove the car. Instead of complying, the man made death threats against the officers. Later that day, Officer William Clements of the Seat Pleasant Police Department, returned to that home to impound the car. Officer Yeszerski responded as well to assist based on the earlier threats. When the officers arrived, the man suddenly came out of his home, approached the officers from behind and fatally shot both officers.

Officer Yeszerski joined the Prince George’s County Police Department on November 6, 1967, as a member of Session 3-67, a class that would ultimately lose three of its members in the line of duty. He served this agency for one year and was the sixth member to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Officer Clements served the Seat Pleasant Police Department for four years and was the first member of that agency to make the ultimate sacrifice. He was 24 years old and survived by his wife and young daughter.

At the time of his death, Officer Robert E. Yeszerski was 23 years old and survived by his expectant wife and two young children.

Prince George's County Police Chief Mark Magaw today strongly condemned the actions of Officer Jenchesky Santiago following his conviction on charges of first and second degree assault, misconduct in office and the use of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence.

Santiago was convicted for behavior which occurred while he was on duty on May 10, 2014. A citizen recorded Santiago's actions on a cell phone. Santiago puts a gun to a citizen's head during an investigatory stop in Bowie. No one was injured.

The Prince George's County Police Department's Internal Affairs Division launched an investigation after learning of this incident. The department brought this case to the State's Attorney's Office for review.Santiago was suspended on June 3, 2014. Following his indictment, his status changed to suspended without pay.

As part of the department's ongoing commitment to transparency and accountability, we are releasing the cell phone video.

"The actions Officer Santiago chose to take that day are his alone. His behavior is flagrant, appalling and isolated. His actions are among the worst I've seen as Chief of Police and that will be taken into account when I make a decision about his employment," said Chief Mark Magaw.

Maryland law requires Santiago have the right to appeal the outcome of the department's administrative investigation. Following the final outcome of the administrative process, the findings will go to Chief Magaw.

Santiago had been employed by the PGPD for two years when the incident occurred and was assigned to the Bureau of Patrol.

“I am honored to have been selected to lead an agency that is such a critical component in the county government and I thank Mr. Baker for this opportunity. I am torn in my decision to retire. However, it is time to move on.  I am proud of my accomplishments and the many relationships I have formed on the police department and in the community. I look forward to this new challenge, while continuing to serve the citizens of Prince George’s County and working with Chief Magaw in a different capacity” said Deputy Chief Whittington.

The County Council is charged with confirming the County Executive’s selection for Chief of Police. Once all dates are finalized, we will announce them.

The Prince George’s County Police Department made a quick arrest in connection with last night’s homicide in Fort Washington. The victim is 44-year-old Keith Anthony Williams of Newmont Street in Fort Washington. The suspect is 17-year-old Draeton Hawkins of the 2900 block of Tucker Road in Fort Washington. He is being charged as an adult in this case.

On December 13, 2015, at about 9:45 pm, patrol officers were called to the 2900 block of Tucker Road for the report of a crash involving one car. When they arrived, patrol officers found Williams inside the car suffering from stab wounds. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

The preliminary investigation reveals the victim and suspect got into an argument that escalated into the fatal stabbing. Right after being stabbed, Williams got into the car to try to leave the scene, but died of his injuries a short time later. Williams was a family friend of the suspect. Hawkins was arrested a short time after the homicide not far from his home. He is charged with first and second degree murder. He’s in custody of the Department of Corrections on a no bond status.
